Hazardous waste

The other day a friend asked me how to dispose of some old medication, and I have to admit that flushing it down the toilet or asking the pharmacy if they take old medications back were my two answers, though only one of them is right. My town has a yearly hazardous waste day where they accept things like automotive fluids, paints and solvents, household cleaners and chemicals as well as mercury thermometers and medications. If your town has one, this is a great way to dispose of such items. However, flushing down the toilet is NOT the recommended mode of disposal for most medications, with the exception of certain prescription drugs. Another quick article can be found here.
