Foodie Friday: Quince!

013I promise I am not going to talk only about foods starting with “QU.” (Last week’s Foodie Friday: quinoa post). However, I had a new food last week and wanted to share. Some friends brought over quince paste as an appetizer. What is quince? According to  Wikipedia:

It is a small deciduous tree, growing 5–8 m tall and 4–6 m wide, related to apples and pears, and like them has a pome fruit, which is bright golden yellow when mature, pear-shaped, 7–12 cm long and 6–9 cm broad.

I don’t think I’ve ever had quince before, though I have eaten AT Quince several years ago. The sticky, fruity and sweet quince paste was eaten speared with a toothpick together with some Manchego cheese and baguette. It was very delicious and something I’ll be sure to look for when I’m in a “fancy” grocery store.

  1. At the fancy restaurant we went to in Chicago this past weekend, one of the courses had three little pieces of seared lamb. One was topped with pumpkin puree (tasty), one with eggplant (yum) and the last with minced quince! It was delicious and made me think of your blog.
